How Your Cellphone Can Help You Avoid Texting & Driving

Avoid Texting and Driving

No matter where we are – whether it’s at home, at work, or even in the bathroom – it seems we cannot keep our hands off our cellphones. Unfortunately, many of us have trouble resisting the urge to use their phones while they are behind the wheel.

Distracted driving as a result of cellphone use has become one of the most common causes of car accidents in the United States. Additionally, texting while driving can also result in a traffic ticket and potentially points on your driver’s license.

However, there is a way you can use your smartphone as a tool to avoid distracted driving, rather than cause it. There are several safe driving apps available to help you break the habit and even make sure loved ones know you are safe.

Here are three apps that can make you a safer driver:

  • LifeSaver (Availability: Android and iOS) – This app activates as soon as you start driving. If you attempt to check your phone while the vehicle is in motion, you will be greeted by a lock screen that prevents you from seeing any incoming notifications. However, if you are expected an important e-mail or text, LifeSaver allows you to create exceptions for specific contacts. You can take calls via Bluetooth. Not only is this app used by families, but it is also used by commercial fleets to monitor fleet driver performance and obtain daily/weekly reports regarding potential distracted driving violations.

  • AT&T DriveMode (Availability: Android and iOS) – This app automatically turns on when you drive at 25 MPH. All incoming calls and text messages are silenced, and all senders will receive an autoreply, letting them know you are on the road. Parents who monitor their children’s driving behavior through DriveMode can receive a text message if the app or GPS is turned off.

  • TrueMotion Family (Availability: Android and iOS) – This app enables families to track each members’ locations and driving behaviors in order to score and rank each driver in the group. Each car trip is graded on a 100-point scale and helps drivers identify risky behaviors and make improvements.
