Brain Injury Awareness Month

Brain Injury Awareness Month

For the last 30 years, the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) has been proudly leading the nation in observing Brain Injury Awareness Month every March with its engaging public awareness campaign.

BIAA announced that the theme for the 2018 to 2020 campaign will be “Change Your Mind.” The goal of the #ChangeYourMind public awareness campaign is to educate the general public about the frequency of brain injury and the needs of people with brain injuries and their families.

The #ChangeYourMind campaign is crucial to:

  • De-stigmatizing brain injury
  • Empowering survivors of brain injuries
  • Empowering caregivers
  • Promoting available support
  • Advocating for more research
  • Promoting the need for prevention
  • Access to care

The Brain Injury Association of America estimates that 1.7 million children and adults in the United States suffer traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year. Another 795,000 people sustain an acquired brain injury (ABI) from non-traumatic causes each year. The Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center reported that a total of 383, 947 of U.S. service members have been diagnosed with TBI over the last 18 years.

Common causes of brain injuries include:

  • Slip & Fall Accidents
  • Bicycle accidents
  • Sports Injuries
  • Motor Vehicle accidents
  • Combative Training
