Thanksgiving DUI Statistics

Thanksgiving DUI Statistics

Millions of Americans will be traveling this Thanksgiving to visit their friends and family. Although Thanksgiving is a time to enjoy a delicious meal and spend quality time with your loved ones, it is also a very dangerous time for drivers to be on the road.

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving has become known as “Thanksgiving Eve” because it is a night that sees an increase in DUI accidents and fatalities. In fact, more than 800 people died over the Thanksgiving holiday due to alcohol-impaired-driving accidents between 2012 and 2016.

Every year, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warns drivers to be cautious on Thanksgiving, and for good reason too. The number of fatal car accidents that occur on Thanksgiving make it the deadliest holiday of the year.

In 2012, Mothers Against Drunk Driving reported that more drunk driving deaths occurred over the Thanksgiving holiday than the Christmas holiday. According to NHTSA, at least 40% of passengers killed in 2012 on Thanksgiving were involved in crashes with drunk drivers.

Alcohol sales also increase during the Thanksgiving holiday, which contributes to the high DUI and accident rate:

  • Alcohol sales increase by 23% when compared to the previous Wednesday.
  • Beer sales increase by 270%.
  • Liquor sales increase by 114%.

Tips to Avoid a DUI This Thanksgiving

The NHTSA suggests taking the following actions to avoid getting a DUI this Thanksgiving holiday:

  • Plan ahead and avoid traveling during busy hours.
  • Designate a sober driver before you start drinking alcohol.
  • If you have too much to drink, use public transportation, or call a taxi or ride share service to take you home safely.

If you are arrested for a DUI over the Thanksgiving holiday, you should immediately seek an attorney to get help defending your rights.
