Fort Collins man charged with assault, DUI after traffic stop

A young man from Fort Collins, Colorado, has been charged with DUI and assault after allegedly attacking a police officer during a traffic stop.

The Coloradoan reports that the 19-year-old was stopped by a Larimer County sheriff's deputy on the night of Saturday, February 28, just near City Park Avenue and West Elizabeth Street. While the source notes that the driver was pulled over for a broken headlight, the deputy soon suspected that the Fort Collins man had been driving under the influence and subsequently asked him to step out of the car with the help of another police officer.

"As the deputy attempt to handcuff [the suspect] for DUI, [he] 'pulled away and began fighting' with the two law enforcement officers," the news outlet writes. "At one point, [the suspect] struck the side of the deputy's head with his elbow."

The young man then attempted to flee the scene but only made it a short distance before being caught by the officers. He has since been arrested and charged for assault and DUI. The deputy reportedly suffered a fractured finger in the struggle.

While being pulled over by a police officer, especially if you've had a few drinks beforehand, can be a tense and anxiety-inducing experience, lashing out against an officer will only make your situation worse, resulting in new charges and even harsher penalties, including jail time.
