Reese Witherspoon and her husband prove a DUI doesn't have to ruin your life

The entertainment industry is in the midst of awards season, with the Oscars less than a month away. One of the favorites to take home the Academy Award for Best Actress is Reese Witherspoon, who received a slew of nominations for her role in the critically acclaimed movie "Wild." But it wasn't too long ago that Witherspoon and her husband, talent agent Jim Toth, had some wild behavior of their own.

The couple had reportedly been out to dinner in Atlanta in 2013 when a law enforcement officer pulled over Toth and charged him with driving under the influence (DUI). Witherspoon was also intoxicated and got out of the car, against the state trooper's orders, and began arguing with him. The officer then arrested the 37-year-old actress, charging her with disorderly conduct. Dash camera footage shows an outraged Witherspoon, demanding loudly, "Do you know my name?"

She later apologized for her behavior, pleading no contest to the charge and paying a $213 fine. E! News reports that Toth pleaded guilty to one charge of DUI, prompting the court to drop several other criminal charges. As a result, the 42-year-old avoided jail time, spending 12 months on probation, completing 40 hours of community service, attending an alcohol education program and paying a fine.

"I think it was a moment where people realized that I wasn't exactly what they thought I was," Witherspoon told reporters at a recent press conference, while promoting "Wild." "It's part of human nature. I made a mistake. We all make mistakes. The best you can do is say sorry and learn from it and move on."

Of course, to "move on" from your mistake with minimal long-term damage to your life and career, it is crucial that you have an experienced Colorado DUI attorney representing you and your legal interests in court.
