Federal Heights woman charged with vehicular homicide, hit-and-run

Police have identified the victim of a Denver hit-and-run that occurred last weekend, with the driver responsible currently being held on charges of vehicular homicide and fleeing the scene of a fatal accident.

The Denver Post reports that just after 2 a.m. on Sunday, February 15, a 24-year-old man crossing at the intersection of Fox Street and Colfax Avenue was allegedly struck and killed by a car driven by a 30-year-old Federal Heights woman. According to eyewitnesses, the accused had been driving 60 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone at the time of the collision, and fled the scene afterward. One of those witnesses copied down and reported the woman's license plate number.

According to the city's medical examiner's office, the victim succumbed to "multiple blunt force injuries" resulting from the crash. He had been pronounced dead at the scene by police.

When officers arrived at the alleged driver's home, she confessed to the hit-and-run. She is now being held downtown without bail on charges of vehicular homicide, reckless driving and fleeing the scene.

Being involved in a car accident can be a frightening experience, especially a hit-and-run, where your gut "fight-or-flight" reaction may prompt you to immediately drive away — not realizing how doing so can land you into further trouble. Vehicular homicide is a particularly serious charge that can have accused drivers paying steep fines, losing their licenses and serving years behind bars.
