Aurora Man Facing Vehicular Homicide, DUI Charges after Fatal Three-Car Accident

An Aurora man may be charged with vehicular homicide and driving under the influence after being involved in a car accident that killed two earlier this week.

FOX 31 Denver reports that the 30-year-old had been driving his Denali "at a high rate of speed" northbound on Tower Road when he collided with a Ford Escort heading in the same direction, near East 22nd Avenue. The crash sent both the Escort and Denali spiraling out of control, causing the former to veer off the road and the latter to strike another vehicle, this time a Ford F-150 that had been traveling southbound on Tower.

Although the Denali's driver managed to escape with reportedly non-life-threatening injuries, the drivers of the other two cars — a 45-year-old woman in the Escort and a 60-year-old man in the Fb -150 — perished in the crash. The accident occurred a little before 2 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10 and prompted police to close off both directions of Tower Road — between Smith Road and East Montview Boulevard — for over six hours as they investigated the scene.

A spokesperson from the Aurora police department said that they are looking at alcohol and speeding as the "primary factors into the crash." While the Denali's driver allegedly responsible for the three-car accident has not been formally charged yet, he could be facing two counts of vehicular homicide as well as DUI in Colorado.

While an ordinary Colorado DUI charge may only be treated as a misdemeanor by default, compounding it with two counts of vehicular homicide immediately upgrades the offense to a felony, resulting in potentially years served in prison, not to mention significant financial penalties as well.
